We often get questions from first time buyers about dealing with their neighbours. We’ve seen the very good, the bad, and everything in between over the last 40 years or so. Here’s our advice on how to move things forward in a smooth way.

Rule #1: Talk Early

It doesn’t matter if you’re anticipating cooperation or you’re concerned about issues with the folks next door: the time to talk is now. Be friendly and proactive. 99% of the spats we’ve seen could have been nipped in the bud if this advice was followed.

Be friendly and proactive with your neighbours.

Do I need permission from my neighbours?

It depends. We like to say “Save half and start with happy neighbours!” If you’re sharing the cost the fence will usually go right on top of the property line and they’ll be involved in the decision making from the get-go.

If you’re paying the full amount yourself we recommend installing just inside your property line. In this case you don’t need their permission. But please see Rule #1. It’s important that everyone knows what to expect before the posts go in the ground.

Do the neighbours need to pay half?

The neighbours often pay half, but it’s not a requirement. Obviously people have different priorities and financial concerns so don’t be too surprised if your friends next door aren’t on board with a project that’s near and dear to your heart. It’s normal, there shouldn’t be bad feelings about it.

Can the neighbours pay directly to Fence-All?

Yes. It’s very common for us to draw up different contracts for each address. Let’s say you want your entire backyard fenced in, but only one run (40′, for example) will be shared with the family next door. Your contract will have a note on it saying that you pay half for that 40′ (the other half will be on your neighbour’s contract).

What if there are a whole group of neighbours?

Great! We have a lot of experience handling that scenario. Hit the red “BOOK YOUR FREE ESTIMATE” button anywhere on our website and you’ll be able to choose a time and place that’s convenient for everyone involved. It helps to get the ball rolling if one person takes the lead to book the appointment. After that everybody will have all of their questions and concerns answered by our sales rep.
