Do gates need overhead braces?

An overhead gate brace adds strength, stability, and longevity to a gate. It acts like an archway and adds balance to your gate system.

A typical walk gate width is 36", narrow enough that a brace usually isn't required (though it never hurts!). But if the opening is wider, or it's a double gate, or if one of the posts doesn't connect to a fence panel, a brace will be necessary.

The good news: braces look great. You get aesthetic appeal and structural stabilitiy at the same time. The image below shows a Newport, our most ornate wood brace.
